Enjoying the Winter Season at Daybreak in South Jordan

January 22, 2018

South Jordan Utah Sunset

South Jordan is known for having a variety of outdoor activities, like biking, fishing and boating. But what happens in the winter? Plenty! Check out our list of fun things to do – inside and out!

AT DAYBREAK

Daybreak Utah Homes

  1. The usual winter sports. Sledding, cross country skiing and snow shoeing are all popular pastimes here at Daybreak. From the sledding hill in Northshore Village (off of Vermillion Drive), to the snow covered trails around Oquirrh Lake, residents use the public spaces here for a range of winter activities.
  2. Biking. Just because temperatures have dropped doesn’t mean you should stop biking. Just remember to dress appropriately, outfit your bike for snow & ice, and be aware of your surroundings.
  3. Head for the Community Center. No matter how cold it is outside, the facilities here are warm and convenient! Whether you shoot hoops on the basketball court, or go for a run on the indoor track, keeping active is so easy.
  4. Boondocks Fun Center (Draper). When the kids get antsy, head for the Fun Center! There are all day indoor passes for kids – and adults! Includes arcade games, 4D movies, flight simulator, and laser tag.

BEYOND DAYBREAK

Ice Skating Utah

  1. Indoor ice skating (Utah Olympic Oval in Kearns). Ice skating inside is a great idea, especially with younger kids. This rink is huge and worth the price for a few hours of fun. Plus, it’s a great workout!
  2. The Hogle Zoo (Salt Lake City). The animals are here, but the crowds aren’t! Bundle up and let the kids see what the zoo animals are up to during the winter months.
  3. Go to the birds. Start with the Tracy Aviary at Liberty Park. It is open daily and offers a great introduction to many Utah birds. The Nature Conservancy’s Great Salt Lake Shorelands Preserve west of Layton has a boardwalk trail, an observatory tower and an outdoor visitor center.
  4. Jordan River Parkway. The parkway spans the entire length of the Salt Lake Valley with paved trails, parks, playgrounds and covered picnic areas. With a trailhead just minutes from Daybreak, this is a great way to try out new bicycles or even to see some winter birds, including bald eagles.
  5. Antelope Island State Park. Just an hour or so from Daybreak is Antelope Island State Park. Each time of year offers a different personality at the Great Salt Lake’s largest island. On a calm winter’s day, you can enjoy seeing wildlife such as bison, deer and antelope as well as birds. There are some nice hiking trails, too.
  6. Go fish. Winter fishing requires a bit of planning and knowledge of when it’s safe to go on the ice, but it’s worth it. The Division of Wildlife Resources stocks some local waters in the fall, which makes for good winter ice fishing. The best family fishing waters include Hyrum Reservoir, Mantua Reservoir, Rockport State Park, East Canyon State Park and Deer Creek State Park.
