5 Tips to Prep Your Home For Winter

January 17, 2019

In scenic Utah, there’s nothing more beautiful than wintertime. Although this snowy season creates the prettiest landscapes and of course, world-class skiing, it can also cause damage to your Sego home if you don’t take proper precautions. From keeping gutters clear to detaching hoses from faucets, these tips will ensure your cozy Sego home is safe and secure during the most magical time of the year:

  1. Invest in weather stripping

“Warm air in, cold air out” sounds nice, doesn’t it? Weather stripping your windows and doors will help to keep you and your family as comfortable as can be by preventing air leaks. Most hardware stores carry Caulk which is perfect for sealing up around windows.

  1. Clean your gutters

Because gutters help drain water away from your roof or your house, they can cause melting ice and snow to seep into your roof or even flood your home’s foundation if they’re blocked. Now’s the perfect time to clear your gutters or enlist the help of a roofing professional.

  1. Protect pipes from freezing

A burst pipe can cause more than $5,000 in water damage, but there are several steps you can take to avoid any problems all together. When you leave your home, make sure to keep your heat above 55 degrees to prevent the pipes from freezing. During cold snaps, letting your faucets drip will also help keep pipes in tip-top shape. Last but not least, you can wrap exposed piping with foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves found at the hardware store.

  1. Remove garden hoses from faucets

As simple fix, removing your garden hoses from outdoor faucets will prevent backed up water from freezing and cracking pipes. If you didn’t already do this in the fall, make sure to head outside and release your hoses, as well as turn off any shutoff valves on water supply lines that lead to exterior faucets.

  1. Keep garages and exterior doors closed

In order to keep heat inside (and prevent cold air from sneaking in), make it a priority to keep your garage and exterior doors closed for as long as they can be.

This winter, take a little time to ensure that your Sego home is adequately prepared for the season, so you won’t have to worry about any surprises. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of wintertime, whether you’re outside enjoying the fresh snow or indoors sipping a hot drink by the fire. We hope you have a happy and warm beginning to the year!
